Reconstruire une vision américaine de la Révolution française : Gouverneur Morris, architecte d’une pensée anti-Jeffersonienne ?

fr L’historiographie de la Révolution française est dense, et ses récits fondateurs témoignent du caractère polyphonique de cette structure narrative. Parmi ses voix américaines, les écrits de Gouverneur Morris, acteur de deux révolutions, américaine et française, n’ont été que peu exploités des deux côtés de l’Atlantique, contrairement à ceux de Thomas Jefferson. Cet article essaiera de montrer comment ce dernier a dominé, au détriment de voix dissidentes, le paysage diplomatique américain à la fin du xviiie siècle pour y imposer les termes de son propre récit. L’analyse portera sur le développement parallèle d’une vision bel et bien indépendante et singulière de la Révolution française, celle de Gouverneur Morris, en tension, de par ses principes organicistes, avec la rhétorique universaliste Jeffersonienne. L’étude confrontera la vision de ces deux architectes de la pensée politique américaine pour faire émerger un récit historique enrichi de la Révolution française, grâce aux différents apports théoriques défendus par ces bâtisseurs républicains.

en The historiography of the French Revolution is a dense and polyphonic narrative; among its American voices, the writings of Gouverneur Morris, actor of two revolutions ‒ American and French – have been barely studied by historians, on each side of the Atlantic, contrary to those of Thomas Jefferson. This article will try to show how the latter’s political vision dominated the American diplomatic relationships at the end of the eighteenth century, at the expense of other dissident voices, thus imposing his own narrative. Morris’s singular appraisal of the French Revolution will be studied in order to rebuild his particular political framework whose organicist vision is in tension with the universalist rhetoric of Jefferson. This study will compare the perception of these two architects of American political thought, in an attempt to bring to the fore an enriched historical narrative of the French Revolution, thanks to the different theoretical contributions of these two republican builders.
