Entre gallophobie et gallomanie : la perception de la France chez les marchands américains en voyage, 1776 - 1815

fr Alors que les colonies américaines proclament en 1776 leur rupture politique avec la Mère Patrie, la France propose aux insurgés une coopération militaire et commerciale. Les marchands américains sont au cœur des nouveaux réseaux d’échanges franco-américains, et un séjour dans le pays leur permet de dépasser leurs a priori, nouer des contacts et définir l’identité nationale de la jeune République. Comment la France est-elle perçue dans les récits des marchands en voyage entre les deux guerres d’Indépendance (1776-1815) ? L’ennemi de toujours devient un partenaire économique, une « république-sœur » en 1789 et un nouveau modèle culturel. Mais alors qu’à partir de 1793 la France s’enfonce dans la Terreur, les guerres révolutionnaires puis napoléoniennes, l’admiration fait place à la suspicion et à la répulsion. Les voyageurs américains prennent conscience qu’ils ne forgeront pas leur identité en imitant l’Europe, mais en s’en détachant.

American merchants were at the core of these newly developed networks, and by travelling to France, were able to rethink their stereotyped vision, strengthen exchanges, and define their national identity. What perception of France emerges from the writings of these merchants travelling between the two wars of independence (1776-1815)? The age-old enemy turns into an economic partner, a ‘sister-republic’ in 1789 and a new cultural model. But from 1793, as France plunges into the Terror, the revolutionary and Napoleonic wars, admiration gave way to suspicion and repulsion. American travellers then realise they will not forge their identity by imitating European powers, but by turning away from them.
