“A Little Knowledge Is Still Knowledge”: Some Remarks About Locke’s Scepticism Concerning Scientific Knowledge

en The charge of scepticism was already brought against Locke by one of his contemporaries: Bishop Stillingfleet criticized the limited range and certainty guaranteed to knowledge by the “new way of ideas” formulated in Locke’s Essay on Human Understanding. In his response to the bishop, Locke disclaimed scepticism as incompatible with a sincere love for truth and he denied validity to any inference of the non existence of substances from the uncertainty and obscurity of our knowledge of them. The same disclaimer can be extended to another kind of scepticism with which Locke has been charged more recently, relating to corpuscularianism: although it seemed inconceivable in many important aspects, corpuscularianism in Locke’s opinion was the theory which went closest to truth because its explanatory limits could not afford sufficient reasons to prefer alternative, more inconceivable hypotheses.

fr Les accusations de scepticisme portées contre Locke remontent à l’un de ses contemporains : l’évêque Stillingfleet critiqua les limites de la portée et de la certitude de la connaissance formulées par « the new way of ideas » dans l’Essay on Human Understanding. Dans sa réponse à l’évêque, Locke rejeta le scepticisme comme étant incompatible avec un amour sincère de la vérité et réfuta la conclusion selon laquelle l’incertitude et l’obscurité de notre perception des substances impliquerait leur non-existence. Cette réfutation peut s’étendre à une accusation plus récente de scepticisme à l’encontre de Locke, portant sur la théorie corpusculaire : alors qu’elle paraissait inconcevable par de nombreux aspects importants, cette théorie est selon Locke celle qui s’approche le plus de la vérité car ses limites explicatives ne peuvent amener à lui préférer d’autres hypothèses, plus inconcevables encore.
