Les poches ou la voie / voix moyenne : valeurs et pratiques des femmes de la middling sort en Grande-Bretagne au XVIIIe siècle

fr Fondé sur un ouvrage écrit en collaboration avec Barbara Burman à paraître chez Ashgate (titre provisoire, The Artful Pocket : Social and Cultural History of an Everyday Object, 17th-19th Century), cet article se propose de s’intéresser aux poches féminines et à leur lien aux pratiques et valeurs des classes moyennes en Grande-Bretagne au xviiie siècle à travers une approche méthodologique spécifique mettant les objets au premier plan. Cette approche matérielle, qui fait des objets une source irremplaçable de l’histoire sociale, s’attache à redonner une voix à des femmes fréquemment étudiées au prisme de discours et de représentations dont elles ne sont souvent pas les auteures et qui tendent à nier leur individualité. En « faisant parler » des objets qu’elles confectionnaient de leurs mains, portaient tous les jours au plus près de leur corps et qui gardent la trace matérielle de ces vies oubliées, nous tenterons de faire entendre la voie/voix moyenne de ces femmes.

en Based on a book jointly written with Barbara Burman and to be published by Ashgate (The Artful Pocket: Social and Cultural History of an Everyday Object 17th-19th century), this article adopts a material culture approach to look at women’s tie-on pockets in relation to female middle-class values and practices in eighteenth-century Britain. It argues for the centrality of objects as historical sources – and not just illustrations – and thus challenges the traditional reliance of historians on written documents only when it comes to studying a period during which material literacy was much more widespread than textual literacy. In that context, looking at an object which middling women made with their own hands and wore close to their bodies enables the historian to study the embodied practices of these women. Restoring their agency, the material culture approach to the history of middling women allows them to tell something of their stories in their own voices.
