The Middling Sort of People in the Eighteenth-Century English-Speaking World

Les crises dynastiques successives de 1688 et 1714 provoquèrent une reconceptualisation de la relation unissant le souverain à son peuple, et les middling ranks devinrent les représentants de la nation. Ils furent fréquemment représentés comme un groupe frugal de contribuables patriotes qui employaient leurs ressources pour promouvoir l’Angleterre dans les domaines économique, politique et culturel. Sachant lire et écrire, ils ont su faire fructifier leurs affaires et prendre part aux débats politiques à une époque où l’opinion publique commençait à compter. Leur implication dans l’administration locale leur a conféré une influence croissante sur la politique nationale, en particulier à la Chambre des Communes. Ils se sont intégrés à l’establishment à mesure qu’émergeait leur conscience de classe, vers la fin du xviiie siècle.

en There were many opportunities for self-advancement in modern Britain, which favoured the rise of the middling orders of people. The successive dynastic crises of 1688 and 1714 led to a reconceptualization of the relationship between the monarch and the people, and the middling orders came to embody the nation. They were often idealized as frugal, tax paying and patriotic, using their resources to promote Englishness whether in the economic, political or cultural spheres. A literate group, they were able to conduct their businesses successfully and to take part in political debates when public opinion began to be reckoned with. Their participation in local government strengthened their influence on national politics, especially on the Commons. Towards the end of the eighteenth century they gradually became part of the establishment, while their sense of class-consciousness emerged.
