The “Crossing Borders Project”

en The Crossing borders project, Musée royal de l’Afrique centrale (Tervuren, Belgium), aims at the methodological integration of archaeology and historical linguistics. The correlation between, on the one hand, archaeological cultures and, on the other hand, the bantu languages expansion phenomenon has generated heated debates. To promote the integration of archaeology and linguistics, keeping a tight control on the data we have chosen to limit temporal and spatial framework of our field of investigation to south central Africa during the last millennia. Methodological integration is achieved thanks to the analysis of pottery traditions used as an interface between disciplines and between the present and the past. In this paper, we examine the distribution of pottery building techniques (roughing-out stage) in Katanga (Democratic Republic of Congo). The existence of three great technical provinces is correlated to diverse form of social identity. The role of famous regional political entities in the formation of social spaces is considered.

fr Le Projet « Crossing Borders », fondé au Musée royal de l’Afrique centrale (Tervuren, Belgique), vise au rapprochement méthodologique de l’archéologie et de la linguistique historique. Les relations établies entre les cultures archéologiques d’Afrique subsaharienne, d’une part, et l’expansion des langues bantoues, d’autre part, ont suscité de vifs débats. Afin de tester les possibilités d’intégration méthodologique tout en gardant un contrôle sur les données, nous avons choisi de limiter le champ des investigations dans le temps et dans l’espace, en nous concentrant sur l’Afrique centrale méridionale durant le dernier millénaire. L’intégration méthodologique passe par l’étude des traditions céramiques comme interface à la fois entre disciplines et entre passé et présent. Dans cet article nous examinons la distribution spatiale des techniques de façonnage au Katanga (DRC). L’existence de trois grandes provinces techniques est mise en relation avec diverses formes d’identités sociales. Nous envisageons le rôle des grandes entités politiques régionales dans la formation des espaces sociaux mis en évidence.
