Animalizing Women and Men in an Episode of the Querelle des femmes : John Lyly vs Jane Anger

fr La première défense en anglais écrite par une persona autoriale féminine, Jane Anger, sous le titre Protection for Women (1589) appartient à la controverse connue sous le nom de Querelle des femmes. À ce titre, elle envisage un opposant dont elle récuse les arguments. Dans cet article, l’opposant, dont l’identité réelle demeure incertaine, est John Lyly dans sa Cooling Card for Philautus (1578). Les deux textes sont analysés à travers les bestiaires qu’ils construisent pour définir les natures féminine et masculine. Dans un premier temps, il analyse les enjeux philosophiques de ces comparaisons animales. Dans un second temps, il étudie comment la défense par Lyly de l’ordre des sexes se fonde sur le positionnement du sexe féminin à la frontière entre l’humain et l’animal. Enfin, il établit comment Anger déconstruit l’attaque de son adversaire en démontrant que la misogynie et la misogamie ramènent les hommes au rang des bêtes.

en Jane Anger’s Protection for Women (1589), the first defence in English written by a female authorial persona, is part of the controversy known as the Querelle des femmes. As such, it posits an opponent whose arguments are rebutted. In this paper, this opponent, whose identity remains uncertain, is considered to be John Lyly in his Cooling Card for Philautus (1578). Both texts are analyzed through the bestiaries they build to define both female nature and male nature. In a first part, it analyzes the philosophical stakes of these animal similes. In a second part, it discusses Lyly’s defence of the gender order based on his positioning of the female sex at the boundary between the human group and the animal group. Finally, it shows how Anger retorted by demonstrating that misogyny and misogamy were taking men straight back to bestiality.
