Rêver, interpréter, lire dans Roderick Random

fr Cet article s’intéresse à l’incipit de Roderick Random (1748), premier roman de Smollett, qui s’ouvre par le récit d’un rêve prémonitoire quelques pages après une préface qui s’en prend violemment à l’idée même de divination, ou « nécromancie ». En comparant ce rêve à d’autres passages du roman puis en le contrastant avec la vision du rêve et de la divination que propose Peregrine Pickle (1751), je cherche à mettre en lumière la spécificité d’un récit qui ne me semble ni parodique ni satirique. Smollett s’appuie en effet ici sur des codes tragiques et surtout bibliques pour proposer une véritable conception de la lecture et de l’écriture fictionnelle.

en This essay focuses on the incipit of Smollett’s first novel, Roderick Random (1748), which opens with an example of oneiromancy only a few pages after a preface which demolishes the very concept of divination or « necromancy ». By comparing the dream interpreted here with other passages of the novel before contrasting it with the way dreams and divination are dealt with in Peregrine Pickle (1751), I try to highlight the specificity of a narrative which does not appear to be parodic or satirical. I argue that Smollett here relies on tragic and biblical codes to offer a real conception of reading and of fictional writing.
