By retracing the course of this merchant turned privateer and then pirate, who unleashed the hatred of the English authorities, before being hailed as popular culture hero, this article explains how the practice of piracy as well as its criminalization by the Crown in the last decade of the 17th century highlight the emerging tensions between the motherland and her colonies, turning Kidd into an early martyr of the cause of the colonial rebels.
